OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is very important to us here at Mirumiru. In fact, we imagined a more sustainable future and our plans including leaving our farm in better shape than we found it in. We’ve done this in several ways and always from the ground up. The first thing our guests notice is the all-weather roads we have built to get you to your campsite safely. What you might not see is the drainage that supports this network – capturing rain and run-off and directing it throughout our farm to our main dams and sharing it with neighbouring dams and creeks. We’ve re-designed the waterflow to stop erosion and help us re-vegetate the farm at key points, capturing carbon, re-filling our underground springs and helping to populate missing habitats. We have already seen the return of echidnas and an accelerating increase in native birds. The way we collect rainwater and filter what you use in your outdoor vintage bath and shower has been carefully planned too. We collect and store precious rainwater and filter that for your use and pipe that down to each Bubbletent. Each time you use water, it’s carefully filtered again and returned to the earth in an ingenious licensed soak away system. This is why we provide organic toiletries for your use and ask you not to bring chemicals to the farm. You can be kind to your body and the earth at the same time! We also avoid chemicals in our cleaning process and instead prefer to always use plant-based and natural solutions. And many guests have asked us what the grassy mounds surrounding their campsites are for. To meet our development requirements, privacy was needed but we have taken that a few steps further. All the soil removed from our roadworks is here, plus any large old tree stumps and wood that needed to be removed for fire safety reasons. Designed in line with a very large, raised garden bed process – a hugel - these mounds have been planted with a variety of native shrubs and trees to create mini-forests over the coming years. In 2021 we established around 600 trees and shrubs on the farm – favouring small leaf varieties to continue to encourage our local smaller birds. In the coming years our guests and family will enjoy natives that will help bind the soil and stop further erosion, feed the birds and the bees and re-introduce native and frost hardy solutions for our beautiful piece of New England. We encourage our guests to limit the plastic they bring and leave behind here, recycle wherever possible and order catering supplies and meals from us to reduce the amount of single-use plastics.
